STYLING YOUR PHOTOSHOOT

It’s never easy being the person in front of a camera. While we can’t all be expected to be supermodels (wishful thinking!), there are certainly things you can do to make your photoshoot experience a comfortable, relaxed AND EVEN ENJOYABLE one.

LET YOUR OUTFIT HELP TELL THE STORY OF YOUR BRAND.

What is it saying?

Are you a sophisticated and high-end event planner? A no nonsense, approachable bookkeeper (like Chrissie here)? An approachable and playful artist? Your clothes can help communicate that!

For example, a neutral blazer with classic lines says polished and professional, but an oversized bright pink blazer may say something completely different (like, ‘works hard, plays harder).

I use to tell my clients not wear certain colours (like neons and bright whites) for their brand sessions, but I’ve since stopped saying that. Why? Because it completely depends on the person!

The reality is, what colours look best on you may not look the best on someone else. Maybe you can rock neon, but your bestie really does look best in black. PESONALLY I love the jewel tones: navy, maroon/burgundy/ruby, mustard, emerald. These look good on just about everyone!

My best advice is to get curious about what colours look best on you. What makes your eyes pop? Your skin seem smoother? Your smile brighter? Do warmer or cooler colours get you compliments from friends?

Find as many colours in your cupboard as you can and hold them up to your face or try them on to see what looks best.

Make sure you do this during the day in a space with natural light for the best results.

Here are my top tips for figuring out what to wear for

YOUR BRAND PHOTO SHOOT

  • Start by thinking about your brand. What are your brand's colors, fonts, and overall aesthetic? What kind of message do you want to convey with your photos? Once you have a good understanding of your brand, you can start to narrow down your clothing options.
  • You'll want to choose clothes that flatter your figure, so make sure that your clothes are properly fitted and that they highlight your best features. Avoid anything that is too tight, too loose, or too revealing.
  • Chunky fabrics can make you look heavier, but too thin fabric can show lines through it, so watch the weight of what you are wearing.
  • Textured fabrics tend to photograph well.

  • If unsure, stick to solid colours and classic styles. This will help to ensure that your photos are timeless and that they won't look dated in a few years. You can always add pops of color with accessories, but it's best to keep the main focus on your clothes.
  • Skip logos and busy patterns. We want to focus on you!
  • Don't be afraid to experiment. This is your chance to try out new looks and to see what works for you. Bring a variety of clothes to your shoot so that you can experiment and see what you like best.

  • Think about the mood you want to create. Do you want your photos to be casual, professional, or something in between? Your clothes can help to set the mood for your photos.
  • Accessorise wisely. A great pair of shoes, a statement necklace, or a scarf can add a touch of personality to your outfit.
  • Don't forget the details. Make sure your hair is fresh and that your nails are clean and polished.

A (VERY ROUGH) Guide to Dressing for Your Body Type

Wear what accentuates your best features, and conceal what you’re not comfortable with. I don’t like drawing extra attention to my upper arms, so you can bet I won’t be going strapless! Personally I stay away from flesh-tones, like light yellow, nude, or light tan. Clothes that contrast against your skin tend to look better in photos.

Finding outfits that highlight your body’s best features can be tricky when you don’t understand your body type.  And while there isn’t really a norm as to what a female body should look like, there are some general categories that help give some direction as to how to plan your wardrobe to make dressing up more enjoyable and rewarding.

Still overwhelmed at the idea of selecting clothes for your brand session?

Many boutiques offer personal styling services that can be incredibly helpful.

Additionally, we'll also discuss what would look best based on the goals of the shoot when we have our pre-shoot Strategy Call. The beauty of doing this on video is that we can do "show and tell"!

Let your personality shine through!

Most importantly, be yourself.

The most important thing is to wear clothes that make you feel confident and express YOU!

If you're feeling awkward or uncomfortable, it will show in your photos. So relax, have fun, and wear clothes that you love.
